Snowy Owls

Teacher - Mr Scott Gourlay

Our Class

Hello! I am Mr Gourlay, class teacher for Year 4 Snowy Owls class. I would also like to introduce four amazing individuals who will be assisting in the class this year. They are: Mrs Jaques, Mrs Houlbrook, Mrs West and Miss Smith.

Snowy Owls will be working extremely hard this year in all areas of the curriculum. I am positive the children will rise to the challenge and succeed in all their goals. I am particularly looking forward to our topic this term because we will be studying Ancient Rome. The children will discover how Rome and its empire came to be, who opposed them, and how they have influenced our culture today. Good times!

I have worked at Winterton Junior School for a handful of years where I started in Year 4 and then moved to Year 5. Like a boomerang, I am now back in Year 4 and very excited. I enjoy teaching the whole curriculum and watching the children in my care grow both academically and socially. My favourite subjects are English, Maths, Science and of course P.E.

When I am not in school my passions are my new house and its wonderful garden. I also follow everything the English Cricket team do, and I am an avid follower of road cycling. I also try to see my extended family in Cornwall as often as possible, whereby eating a ridiculous number of pasties and tubs of clotted cream are mandatory with every visit.

Teaching Assistant - Miss Nicky West

I have worked at Winterton Junior School for many years as a TA and in the past, a Senior Midday Supervisor. I was also the Parent and Friends Group Chairperson for 10 years. Within my role, I work with lots of wonderful children in school so I’m very lucky. I also help run the school choir after school, which I thoroughly enjoy.

I spend a lot of my spare time with my family and friends. I have a dog and four cats which keep me very busy. I enjoy most sports and often go swimming and to the gym. However, I really like football; I support Liverpool and I can get a bit too enthusiastic when I’m watching a match! I also like going to the cinema, singing and listening to music, although, I couldn’t tell you what my favourite song is, as I like so many different ones!

Christine

Teaching Assistant - Mrs Christine Jaques

Hello! I began working at Winterton Junior School as a Teaching Assistant in September 2006. I really enjoy my job working alongside the amazing staff and of course the fantastic children too! This year I am working with Mr Gourlay, Mrs West and Mrs Houlbrook in Snowy Owls Class.

My favourite subjects are Maths and English but I absolutely love our new Guided Reading sessions – sharing a book instead of keeping it to yourself.

In my spare time (when I can find any) I enjoy cooking and entertaining my family and friends. I also love to spend time in my garden. I enjoy trips to the theatre and any invitation to try out a new restaurant.

I love to travel around England but also enjoy foreign holidays too!

Topic Of The Term!

The Roman Empire!

Who were the Romans? Why did they invade? What was life like for a Roman soldier? Who was Boudicca?

This term, Snowy Owls will be tracking the journey of the Roman Empire - learning about strict soldiers, rotten revolts and the lasting legacy that the Romans left us.
